Amanita rhopalopus Bas f. rhopalopus Cap 4.5-l8cm across, bell-shaped to convex becoming flatter with volval remnants hanging from the margin; white; dotted with white or pale brown cottony patches or warts of volval material. Gills free to just reaching stem, crowded; white to pale cream. Stem 60-195 X 8-25mm, solid, tapering slightly toward the top; white; smooth to minutely hairy; the delicate ring falls away as the cap expands; the spindle-shaped basal bulb is deeply rooting and sometimes has cottony patches or warts of volval material on it and the lower stem but these are also frequently absent. Odor strong. Spores ellipsoid, amyloid, 8.5-11 x 5.5-7µ. Deposit white. Habitat singly or in groups on the ground in mixed coniferous and deciduous forests. Rare. Found in northeastern North America. Season August. Not edible - avoid many amanitas contain deadly toxins. |
